ADAPT – ABILITY

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”

―William James

It’s June and the sun is shining long hours! What’s not to love? We’re all enjoying the late-spring life and time outside. With the increased activities comes increased stress. That’s not always a bad thing! The body is incredibly intelligent, able to adapt to internal and external stresses when it is functioning free of interference. Let’s explore more about how we adapt to stress, and how chiropractic fits the picture.

In his 1927 Chiropractic Textbook, Ralph W. Stephenson defined Innate Intelligence as the inborn intelligence every living thing has within its body, with the mission to maintain the material of the body in active organization. (1). That ability for the body to maintain and organize itself – even when undergoing stresses of life – is the hallmark of human adaptability. This works appropriately 100% of the time when there is no interference to the nervous system.

What happens when there is interference? Chiropractically speaking, the primary interference is a spinal subluxation, a spinal misalignment causing “static” in the signal between the brain and any of the body’s tissues. Uncorrected, a subluxation causes inflammation, wasted energy, and puts the body into a state of chronic stress response it wasn’t designed to handle. The body can become stuck in “fight or flight” mode, with reduced adaptability to respond to further stresses. Accumulated stress causes excess release of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine. The nervous system isn’t able to properly process, coordinate, and control all the other systems. The cycle intensifies. Cells, tissues, organs, and whole body systems can suffer as a result.

At Basler Family Chiropractic, we step in to help your body break the chain! We perform routine spinal check-ups and remove subluxations as a cause of interference to the central nerve system – so your innate intelligence can function at optimal potential. Chiropractic care has been shown to increase the nervous system’s “reserve” and responsiveness to stresses, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV). People who are checked and adjusted regularly show increased neurophysiological regulation, adaptability and resilience via their nervous systems. (2)

The science of chiropractic does not cure anything; rather, it allows your central nerve system to function properly to heal and regulate itself and increase your ADAPTABILITY. So welcome the stresses of life, get checked and enjoy your summer with gusto! It’s all in a day’s work.
