Stay Hydrated This Summer: Why Your Spinal Discs Need Water
Summer is the perfect time to play hard and enjoy the outdoors! However, prolonged activities in warmer temperatures also increase your risk of dehydration. While most people know hydration is essential for energy, circulation, and temperature regulation, many are surprised to learn that it also plays a vital role in the health of their spinal discs.
Spinal discs act as cushions between each vertebra, absorbing shock and allowing the spine to move comfortably. Unlike most tissues in the body, discs have very little direct blood supply. Instead, they receive nutrients and eliminate waste through a process called imbibition—the subtle movement of water and nutrients into the disc as it is compressed and released during normal spinal movement. When you’re dehydrated, this process becomes less efficient. Discs may lose water content, reducing their ability to absorb shock and increasing stress on the spine. Over time, poor hydration can contribute to disc degeneration (arthritis), stiffness and discomfort. (2)
Regular movement, staying well-hydrated, and maintaining proper spinal function all support healthy imbibition. This is where chiropractic care makes the meaningful difference! Chiropractic adjustments restore normal joint motion to the spine, allowing the natural pumping action to encourage fluid exchange within the discs. When spinal joints move as they should, discs are better able to receive the hydration and nutrients they need to stay resilient and healthy.
This summer, make hydration a priority by drinking water (often with clean electrolytes!) consistently throughout the day, especially during outdoor activities. Pair that with regular exercise, stretching, and chiropractic care to support your spine from the inside out.
